The Project

The A1 Trunk Road is a north-south regional route of strategic importance connecting the two sections of the A1(M) at Peterborough in the south and Blyth in the north. Most of this length is of a satisfactory standard but there were localised problems at six roundabouts.

The Highways Agency has replaced the following single level roundabouts with grade separated junctions to reduce congestion, queuing and delays in these areas and to improve a poor safety record:

  • Blyth (A1/A614)
  • Apleyhead (A1/A614/A57)
  • Markham Moor (A1/A57)
  • Gonerby Moor (A1/B1174)
  • Colsterworth (A1/A151) and the junction of A1/B6403
  • Carpenters Lodge (A1/B1081)

Blyth Junction (A1/A614)

Repair works necessary as a result of Major Incident

The Highways Agency is carrying out repair work to the A1 at Blyth Junction (A1/A614) as a consequence of a major lorry fire incident that occurred at the junction. An HGV lorry carrying circa 8 tonnes (18,000 litres) of used paint thinners overturned and caught fire on the western roundabout. The used paint thinners escaped from the containers the HGV lorry was carrying, these entered the drainage system and caught fire. This caused extensive damage to the drainage system, destroying it in some areas.

Traffic Management details for the repair works can be found at the Traffic Management and Lane Closures page.
