Scheme Background
The A1 Peterborough to Blyth Grade Separated Junctions scheme entered the Government/s TPI programme, now known as the Programme of Major schemes in 2002.
The Public Consultation for the A1/ A614 Blyth roundabout was held in Summer 2002. This was followed by a Preferred Route Announcement (PRA) being made in Spring 2003.
Public Consultations were held for the other five junctions in Spring 2003. The initial proposals at Colsterworth met with a mixed response, and a second Consultation was held in Summer 2003.
During Spring/ Summer 2003, the main procurement exercise for the scheme was undertaken. The A1 scheme is one of the first of the Highways Agency Early Contractor Initiative (ECI) schemes. This initiative leads to the award of a contract to a Contractor at an earlier stage than in traditional forms of contract.
After five Contractors were invited to tender for the scheme, the ECI Contract was awarded to Interserve Projects in August 2003. Interserve has included Atkins within their contract team as scheme designers. The Highways Agency have commissioned MouchelParkman as the Contract Supervisor.
During 2004, the junction proposals were developed further to Preferred Route Announcement and draft Orders stage. The scheme was also subject to a review under the Government's Spending Review 2004.
The Preferred Route Announcement for the A1/A57/A614 Apleyhead junction was made in December 2004. The Preferred Route Announcement for Carpenters Lodge and Gonerby Moor were made in February 2005. The Preferred Route Announcements for Markham Moor and Colsterworth were made in March 2005. Web versions of the PRA leaflets published are included on this website.
