A1 Peterborough to Blyth Grade Separated Junctions

Summary of Proposals

The Highways Agency proposes to replace the following single level roundabouts with grade separated junctions to reduce congestion, queuing and delays in these areas and to improve a poor safety record:

  • Blyth (A1/A614)
  • Apleyhead (A1/A614/A57)
  • Markham Moor (A1/A57)
  • Gonerby Moor (A1/B1174)
  • Colsterworth (A1/A151) and the junction of A1/B6403
  • Carpenters Lodge (A1/B1081)

Blyth

Blyth junction (also known as Hilltop Roundabout) is a four arm roundabout giving access to Blyth and Bawtry via the B6045 and A614 respectively.

  • Nearly 40,000 vehicles per day use this junction, up to 30% of these being heavy goods vehicles. At certain times of the day this results in substantial delays and congestion.
  • Between 1998 and 2003 there were 30 personal injury accidents in the vicinity of the existing junction.
  • There is no provision for pedestrians and cyclists which makes it difficult for these users to cross the A1.

The Highways Agency proposes to improve safety and reduce congestion by providing a new two level junction consisting of approximately 1.25km of new dual two lane carriageway in cutting. A link road carried over the A1 on a new bridge will connect two new roundabouts linking the A614 to the north with the B6045 to the south. The new northern roundabout will also include direct access to Blyth Services. Links to minor roads and properties will also be provided as part of the proposals and new slip roads will connect the roundabouts to the A1.

Apleyhead

Apleyhead junction (also known as Five Lanes End) is a five arm roundabout giving access to Worksop and New Ollerton via the A57 and A614 respectively.

  • Nearly 40,000 vehicles per day use this junction, up to 27% of these being heavy goods vehicles. At certain times of the day this results in substantial delays and congestion.
  • The recorded accident rate is substantially higher than the national average.
  • There is no provision for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians which makes it difficult for these users to cross the A1.

The Highways Agency proposes to improve safety and reduce congestion by providing a new two level junction consisting of approximately 1.8km of new dual two lane carriageway to the east of the current Apleyhead roundabout. A link road carried over the A1 on a new bridge will connect the existing roundabout to a new roundabout to the east of the new carriageway. This eastern junction will also include a link to the B6420 Mansfield Road. Slip roads, one of which will reuse part of the existing road, will connect the roundabouts to the A1.

Markham Moor

Markham Moor junction is a six-arm roundabout giving access from the A1 to Markham Moor via the A638, to Lincoln via the A57, to Sibthorpe via the B1164 and to Service Areas adjacent to the roundabout.

  • Nearly 39,000 vehicles per day use this junction, up to 25% of these being heavy goods vehicles. At certain times of the day this results in substantial delays and congestion.
  • The delays caused at this roundabout make local access movements difficult.
  • There is inadequate provision for pedestrians and cyclists which makes it difficult for these users to cross the A1.
  • Between 1999 and 2003 there were 75 personal injury accidents in the vicinity of the existing junction.

The Highways Agency proposes to improve safety and reduce congestion by providing a new two level junction. The existing embankment at the south end would be removed and the new A1 carriageway at a similar level to the existing road would be constructed. The existing roundabout would be removed and replaced with two new roundabouts, one on either side of the current junction. A link road carried over the A1 on a new bridge would connect these roundabouts. Entry and exit slip roads would connect the westbound and eastbound carriageways of the A1 to the new roundabouts.

The existing Little Chef building would be retained, and access to it and to the other Service Areas would be modified to improve traffic flow into these facilities.

Gonerby Moor

Gonerby Moor junction is a three-arm roundabout at the intersection of the A1 and B1174 giving access to Grantham.

  • Nearly 36,000 vehicles per day use this junction, up to 24% of these being heavy goods vehicles. At certain times of the day this results in substantial delays and congestion.
  • There is inadequate provision for pedestrians and cyclists which makes it difficult for these users to cross the A1.
  • Between 1999 and 2003 there were 41 personal injury accidents within 2 kilometres of the existing junction.

The Highways Agency proposes to improve safety and reduce congestion by providing a new two level junction consisting of approximately 1.5km of new dual two lane carriageway to the west of the current Gonerby Moor roundabout. A two-way link road carried over the A1 on a new bridge will connect the existing roundabout to a new roundabout to the west of the new dual carriageway. The new roundabout will include a link to Gonerby Lane to enable the closure of the existing T-junction. Slip roads, two of which will reuse part of the existing road, will connect the roundabouts to the A1.

Colsterworth

Colsterworth junction, which is a four-arm roundabout giving access to Corby Glen via the A151 and Colsterworth via the B676.

Some 1.5 kilometres north of the Colsterworth roundabout is an existing crossroads which serves north Colsterworth and the Easton Cold Store via the B6403.

  • Nearly 43,000 vehicles per day use this section of the A1, up to 22% of these being heavy goods vehicles. At certain times of the day this results in substantial delays and congestion at Colsterworth roundabout.
  • Crossing manoeuvres at the B6403 crossroads are difficult.
  • There is inadequate provision for pedestrians and cyclists and which makes it difficult for these users to cross the A1.
  • Between 1999 and 2003 there were 25 personal injury accidents in the vicinity of the existing junctions.

Our objectives are to improve safety and reduce congestion. We would do this by providing two new two-level junctions. The current Colsterworth roundabout would be removed, and a new link road over the A1 would connect the B676 and the A151 to the south of the current junction. There would be a new junction at each end of this link road. Entry and exit slip roads to both northbound and southbound carriageways would connect the B676 and the A151 with the A1.

North of Colsterworth a link road over the A1 would be constructed to join the B6403 east and west of the A1. The central reserve gap at the existing crossroads would be closed and entry and exit slip roads to both northbound and southbound carriageways would connect the B6403 to the A1.

Carpenter's Lodge

Carpenter's Lodge which is a three arm roundabout linking the A1 to the B1081 giving access to Stamford.

Alterations will also be made to the existing T-junction with Racecourse Road, 280m south east of the current Carpenter's Lodge roundabout. The most important reasons for improving this junction are to improve safety and reduce congestion.

  • Nearly 50,000 vehicles per day use this junction, up to 22% of these being heavy goods vehicles. At certain times of the day this results in substantial delays and congestion.
  • There is inadequate provision for pedestrians and cyclists which makes it difficult for these users to cross the A1.
  • Between 1999 and 2003 there were 58 personal injury accidents in the vicinity of the scheme.

The Highways Agency proposes to improve safety and reduce congestion by removing the current roundabout and providing a new two level junction 300m further north on the A1. A two way link road, carried over the A1 on a new bridge, will connect the northbound A1 to the B1081 at a new T-junction near to George Farm. The B1081 will connect to the southbound A1 just to the north of the existing roundabout. We will also modify the T-junction of the A1 and Racecourse Road to make it one way so that vehicles can only turn left from the A1. The current access onto the A1 from Racecourse Road will be closed.
