The Project

This scheme involves lengthening and widening the exit and entry slip roads at A14 Junction 7, improving the circulatory carriageway of the roundabout from the current two lanes to three lanes and providing traffic signals on the roundabout. The bridge to the south of Junction 7 which carries Thorpe Lane over the A14 will need to be demolished and rebuilt to allow for the lengthened and widened A14 slip roads.

Work on the scheme is programmed to start in early May and should be completed by late December 2004. Generally, it is not expected that traffic using the A14 or Junction 7 will be severely affected - although the A14 will be coned down to single lane running at times. The main delays and diversions will occur when the Thorpe Lane Bridge is demolished and replaced. Demolition will take place over one weekend in mid June and will involve the complete closure of the A14 in both directions for the whole weekend. There will be another complete weekend closure in mid September when the new bridge decks are lifted into place. It will be necessary to close Thorpe Lane for a period of 6 months while the new bridge is being constructed.
