The Project

Active Traffic Management is a new motorway scheme being introduced on the M42, junction 3A-7, to the South-East of Birmingham.

The scheme is a pilot project, designed to tackle congestion and improve the reliability of journey times. Building upon best practice from around the world, the pilot combines new and innovative technologies, infrastructure and procedures with those already tried and tested. The aim is to make the best use of the existing road space, providing extra capacity for vehicles, whilst minimising environmental disruption.

It is important that you are aware of this scheme because it involves changes to the way in which you will drive on this motorway.

**M42 Active Traffic Management Controlled Motorway switch-on 29th November**

The scheme has been introduced in phases over the past 12 months. New lighting, gantries, electronic and static signing, emergency roadside telephones and refuge areas, CCTV and advisory speed limits have all been commissioned since November 2004.

The next phase will be introduced on 29th November 2005. This is called a controlled motorway and will mean that mandatory variable speed limits will be in use on the M42. Please look at the Active Traffic Management section of the website to make sure you understand the signs and signals

In the final phase, the hard shoulder will be used as an extra running lane during busy peak periods or incidents, providing additional capacity for vehicles.
