The Project
This is one of the road projects managed by the Highways Agency, the executive agency of the Department for Transport responsible for operating, maintaining and improving England's strategic road network. More specific information about this project will appear here when it becomes available. The HA's network is the single biggest Government asset, valued at over £62 billion and comprising some 9,380km or 5,863 miles of motorways and trunk roads.
It carries a third of all road traffic in England and two-thirds of all freight traffic. More than 170 billion kilometres of journeys are undertaken each year. The network provides a vital service to commerce and industry and has a huge impact on the lives of individuals and communities.
POPE - Five Year After study
As part of our ongoing programme of Post Opening Project Evaluation (POPE) this scheme has been reviewed at one and five years after opening. The studies compare the outturn effects of this scheme to the predicted impacts.
A summary of the five year after report is available to download here: A5 Nesscliffe Bypass (PDF 50KB).
A full version of the report is available to download here:
This scheme has been well received by the local community and we were able to deliver this scheme for less than the forecast cost and therefore achieve a better than expected ratio of benefits to costs (BCR).
The scheme has met its objectives in terms of reducing traffic through the village, improving noise, air quality and pedestrian safety and improving journey time reliability. The scheme also aimed to reduce accident risk. Whilst it has done this, the evaluation notes that there are some local concerns about the roundabouts at each end of the bypass.
Our traffic flow predictions were reasonably accurate and journey times are now 2 to 3 minutes quicker. Around 93% of traffic has switched to the bypass instead of going through the village.
