The Project
Two footbridges over the M6 require impact protection and additional headroom over the hard shoulders for future use as a traffic lane during major resurfacing works. The bridges concerned are Vicarage and White Hill footbridges. Both bridges have reduced headroom clearances over the hardshoulders. This means that the hardshoulder cannot be used as a "running lane" during roadworks. We will be increasing the height of the bridges and strengthening locally at foundation level, as well as thickening supporting columns so they will better withstand vehicle impact. Once the bridges have been temporarily removed, they will be refurbished at an off site location. The footbridges will be re-erected in early September 2004.
