M6 Junction 26 to 27, Three Pin Arch Footbridges

M6 Junction 26 to 27 closures

The M6 will be closed between junctions 26 and 27 from 10.00pm until 8.00am on the following dates:

  • 10/11 July 2004
  • 17/18 July 2004
  • 4/5 September 2004
  • 11/12 September 2004

A full closure of the motorway is necessary as both footbridges span the north and southbound carriageways. Cranes needed to lift these bridges will also be located on the motorway itself. Traffic flow at this time of night is slight and long-distance traffic is being routed along other motorways to keep congestion on local roads to an absolute minimum.

Start of works is planned for 21 June 2004 with the establishment of traffic management along both north and southbound hard shoulders throughout until 21 September 2004. Off-peak, occasional use of lane 1 and 3 will be required subject to traffic flow.

  • The lifting of the first bridge will take place on the night of 10 July 2004 with full closure of the M6 from 10.00 pm until 8.00 am the following morning.
  • A similar operation will take place on the following weekend (17 and 18 July 2004) to take down the second bridge.
  • Re-erection of the first bridge will take place on the evening of 4 September 2004, between 10.00 pm and 8.00 am the following morning.
  • A similar operation will take place on the following weekend (11 and 12 September 2004) to re-erect the second bridge.
  • Total closure weekends will be subject to weather constraints (high winds) which may change these dates.
  • Changes will be made public through media opportunities, e.g. the radio. The stations to listen to are:
    • CFM 96.4 (Cumbria)
    • Smooth FM 100.4 (N. W. England)
    • Signal One 102.6/96.4 FM (Staffordshire and Cheshire)
    • The Bay 96.9 FM (Lancashire and Cumbria)
    • Century 105.4 FM (N. W. England)
