Background Information

M62 Junction 6 Improvement

Background Information

This scheme was added to the Targeted Programme of Improvements (now known as the Programme of Major Schemes) in March 2001. This junction is one of the main gateways into the Merseyside regeneration area providing access via the M57 to Bootle and via the A5300 Knowsley Expressway to the airport and the associated business parks. The links with the M57 also provide one of the main routes into the seaside areas of the south Lancashire coast.

The scheme involves the improvement of this major junction through the provision of links from the M62 westbound to the M57 northbound and from the M57 southbound to the M62 eastbound. The need for additional links to improve movement from M62 westbound to A5300 Knowsley Expressway and from A5300 to M62 eastbound is also being investigated.

Parkman Consultants were appointed in December 2001 by the Highways Agency to look at the options for these links. This work is ongoing and it is expected that we will be in a position to start public consultation in spring 2003.
