The Project

This section of the Manchester Orbital Ring Road carries approximately 116,000 vehicles per day of both strategic long distance traffic and local traffic. For many years the motorway has carried more vehicles than it was designed to carry and this has resulted in congestion at peak periods.

The widened motorway assists the free flow of traffic on the M60 itself and also on the local roads which some vehicles use at present to avoid delays on the motorway.

By the end of May 2006, the whole section of the M60 from Junction 8 to Junction 5 with the Princess Parkway at Northenden was widened to provide at least three - and in some sections four - lanes in each direction.

All temporary speed limits and traffic management were removed on 10th June 2006. Works on two side roads will continue until the end of August. The Minister of State, Dr Stephen Ladyman, attended a completion ceremony held on 22nd June.
