How We Construct Roads

M60 Jct 5 to 8 (formerly M63 Jct 6 to 9) Widening

How we construct roads

Working alongside the existing motorway allows us to minimise congestion and disruption. The new road foundation is formed by machines using layers of stone to bring it to the correct level.

Engineers set out the road position by laying kerbs and driving pins into the ground to show the required levels and thicknesses of material to be laid.

The road is constructed in layers one lane wide, followed by the final road surfacing and lane markings.

Lorries containing hot asphalt line up to feed the pavement machine which operates continuously to lay long sections of road. Each layer is rolled flat and smooth and samples of the asphalt material are taken for testing to ensure they meet with quality standards.
