The Project

The work on Thelwall viaduct has involved the replacement of bearings that were found to be failing. These bearings allow for the expansion and contraction that occurs due to changes in temperature, and also to allow for movement of the bridge as it carries traffic.

Experts in metallurgy were brought in to help identify the causes, and the extent, of the failures to the original bearings. This identified the need to replace all the roller bearings, a difficult and technically challenging process. The work was a massive undertaking.

The full extent of these works has not always been apparent to drivers crossing the viaduct, but underneath several hundred workers have been involved, working day and night in order to complete the job as soon as possible.

It is one of the largest repair projects being undertaken by the Highways Agency. The viaduct is over a mile long, handling over 160,000 vehicles per day. It stands at more than a 100 feet high and weighs over 58,000 tons, which is the equivalent weight of over 5000 double-decker buses.

Further details of the work involved are available from the "Programme of Repairs" page. It can be accessed from the right hand navigation menu of this page.
