The Project

These pages outline the Route Management Strategy (RMS) for the M6 motorway from Junction 20 of the M6 near Warrington to Junction 44 near Carlisle, and the A74 from Carlisle to the Scottish border.

Route Management Strategies have been developed by the Highways Agency to manage individual motorways and trunk roads as part of the wider transport network.

This RMS is being used to help the Highways Agency in planning and optimising investment in the M6 motorway over a ten-year period. It includes a 3-year Action Plan and a 10-year Management Plan. The 3-year plan will be reviewed annually and the overall strategy will be reviewed every 5 years to check on progress and ensure that the route outcomes are still appropriate.

The study has given all road users the opportunity to comment on where problems lie and where investment may be needed over the next ten years. It is hoped that the feedback that has been received can be implemented so that improvements are effectively prioritised.
