A570 Windle Safety Scheme

A556 Area Study

A570 Windle Safety Scheme

From Monday 13th May 2002 the Highways Agency will be carrying out works at the Junction of the A580 East Lancashire Road and the A570 Rainford By-Pass, Windle, St.Helens.

The aim of the scheme is to improve facilities for traffic turning right off the A570 onto the A580, improve facilities for pedestrians and to address the problem of rear-end shunt accidents at the traffic signals.

The works will include modifications to the splitter islands, the re-configuration of the traffic signals and the application of high-friction surfacing material on the approaches to the signals.

Any works involving lane closures on the A580 will be carried out during "off-peak" hours.

To minimise disruption, the scheme will be combined with a scheme to re-surface the A570 Rainford By-Pass between the A580 East Lancashire road and Mill Lane. The Works on this section will be carried out under a contraflow traffic management system. It is expected that the whole scheme will take 14 weeks to complete with the works at Windle Junction taking approximately 4 weeks.

Lancashire County Engineering Services/Cumbria Contract Services J.V. will construct the works under the supervision of the Highway Consultancy (part of Lancashire County Council).
