The Roadworks

The A556 Chester Road is a key part of the main route from Manchester to Birmingham. It links the M6 with theM56 and carries 40,000 vehicles a day. The road also performs an important role for local traffic and for visitors to tourist attractions such as Tatton Park and Dunham Massey. The planned work consists of carriageway resurfacing with a new quieter material and replacement of existing kerbs. This follows on from works carried out along the A556 three years ago. The purpose of this work is to maintain the road to the highest standard and to ensure the safety of the travelling public. It is inevitable that works on this scale will cause disruption, not only to local traffi c but also to long distance journeys. Delays will be minimised by working at night and weekends.

Traffic Management

The road between the M6 and the M56 will be closed to through traffic every night and for nine weekends from Friday 6th February 2004. During the day there will be a temporary 40mph speed limit, monitored by safety cameras. However, delays are still possible.

Access to frontage properties will be maintained for residents, businesses and emergency services.

The main diversion routes for through traffic to access Greater Manchester destinations and Manchester Airport will be signposted on the M6 and M56 motorways.

What you can do to help yourself

The road works will affect a wide area. If you are going to a venue or event in Greater Manchesterwhich is time-sensitive such as a concert or the theatre, a football match or catching a flight from Manchester Airport you are advised to use the Motorway diversion routes and allow plenty of timefor your journey.

Keep your eyes and ears open for press and radio announcements for ongoing and up to date information.

Please keep to the mandatory speed limits and take extra care near the roadworks both for your own safety and the contractors' safety. Safety cameras will be in use.

Remember, to minimise the inconvenience:

  • Use the signed diversion routes
  • Allow more time for the journey
  • Stagger the journey time
  • Use other modes of transport
