Update - April 2008

The High and Low Newton Bypass was opened on 8th April 2008 by Archie Robertson, Chief Executive of the Highways Agency.

The Project

This scheme was added to the Governments Targeted Programme of Improvements (TPI), now known as the Programme of Major Schemes, on 29 October 2003.

The bypass is a 2.4 miles (3.8 km) dual carriageway road running between Lindale Bypass and Barrow Banks.

The old A590 through High and Low Newton was a very busy route carrying up to 14,000 vehicles per day, including 2,000 heavy goods vehicles. The road was substandard in terms of alignment, visibility, width and safe overtaking opportunities. There was a poor accident record, and environmental conditions in the villages were unacceptable due to noise, dust, dirt, fumes and visual intrusion from passing traffic.

The bypass will bring significant benefits to the communities of High Newton, Low Newton and Ayside by removing over 90% of traffic, reducing accidents, removing community severence and improving the environment in the villages, restoring them to their traditional Lakeland setting.

The Statutory Orders needed for the scheme were published on 17 December 2004.

The main works on the bypass started in August 2006.

One Year After study

This scheme has been reviewed as part of our ongoing programme of Post Opening Project Evaluation (POPE).  The study compares  the outturn effects of this scheme to the predicted impacts of the scheme.
