A66 Temple Sowerby Bypass

Background Information

The A66 trunk road forms a strategic trans-Pennine route linking the North West, Cumbria and Scotland to Teesside and the North East. The section of the A66 to be bypassed has a poor accident record with 32 accidents in the five years up to 2000.

The new 4.9 kilometre dual carriageway will start from a new junction with Cliburn Road at the west end through to a new junction at the eastern end tying in with Morland Road.

The Highways Agency recognises the sensitive environment of the area especially where the new road would cross the River Eden. Special consideration will be given to reducing the impact of the road including tree planting and creating wildlife habitats. When the road is on an embankment design techniques will be used to minimise its impact on the landscape.

The new bypass will eliminate the problems caused by the large number of uncontrolled junctions and access points which conflict with the role of the route as a Trans-Pennine link.

Further information on this scheme will be available shortly.
