Route Description

A590 (Barrow - M6) RMS

Route description

This Route Management Strategy covers the A590(T), from the M6 Junction 36 to the A5087 roundabout, Barrow-in-Furness.

A590(T) looking south west near LevensFrom the M6, the route heads north-west towards Kendal. After nearly 6km, the A590(T) meets the A591, which continues into Kendal. Following its Junction with the A591, the A590(T) travels southwest past Levens along a 2-lane dual carriageway. At Sampool Bridge the route crosses into the Lake District National Park and shortly afterwards narrows to a single carriageway as far as Longhowe End. The route widens at this point, into a 2-lane dual carriageway, bypassing the village of Lindale and rising up a steep incline. The route then turns north-west towards the villages of Low and High Newton.

Immediately before Low Newton, the route returns to single carriageway and remains so for the majority of the remaining sections. Immediately after Newby Bridge there is a short section of dual-carriageway after the route has turned back to a south-west direction. There are also short sections of dual-carriageway as the route passes through Backbarrow, Greenodd and south of Arrad Foot. At Greenodd, the A590(T) has a junction with the A5092, which provides the strategic access to the west Cumbrian coastal towns and industry. The route leaves the Lake District National Park immediately south of the Greenodd junction.

A590(T) heading south west in UlverstonAfter Greenodd, the route continues to head south-west and passes through the small town of Ulverston, where there are two short sections of dual-carriageway. The A590(T) then passes through the villages of Swarthmoor and Lindall-in-Furness.

Shortly after Lindal-in-Furness, the A590(T) takes the route of a relatively new section of carriageway, completed in 1993, which forms the Dalton-in-Furness Bypass and the main access to the industrial areas of Barrow-in-Furness. The route terminates to the south-west of Barrow town centre at the roundabout junction with the A5087. The A590 ceases to be a trunk road but continues west from this junction, across Walney Channel and onto Walney Island.
