The Project

In February 2004, Cowfold Bridge on the A1(T) near Leeming in North Yorkshire was struck by an excavator being transported on a low-loader, severely damaging one of the bridge beams. As a precaution the road over the bridge was temporarily closed whilst the strength of the bridge and possible methods of repair were assessed.

As an interim measure the bridge was re-opened under signal control in March to allow single file traffic to cross. Work to repair the bridge includes straightening a beam together with cutting out and replacing a damaged section of the beam.

The works were carried out from early September and were completed by the end of October 2005. After completion the bridge was fully re-opened to traffic.
