The Project
The A1(M) Junction 61 Bowburn Interchange comprises a grade separated junction over the A1(M) to the south of Durham. Currently traffic queues on both motorway exit slip roads and on the local authority road entries to the roundabout, especially at peak traffic periods. There have been 35 injury accidents recorded in the last 5 years, the majority of which have been rear end shunts.
Part time traffic signals were introduced to reduce the delays experienced during the peak periods and to improve safety by addressing the two main factors identified in the accidents at the junction.
The works were undertaken in February and March 2005 at a cost of £365,000. These improvements continue to be monitored to ensure they are working effectively
