The Project

These web pages outline the Route Management Strategy (RMS) for the A66/A174/A1053 Darlington to Teesport road route.

The Route Management Strategy (RMS) is a technique developed by the Highways Agency to provide a framework for managing individual trunk routes as part of a wider transport network. Through this process the Highways Agency can improve, plan and invest efficiently in the trunk road/motorway network and aid the delivery of Highways Agency strategic plans and the ten-year transport policy. RMS's will interlock with local transport strategies (set out in Local Transport Plans) within the context established by the regional transport strategy (set out in Regional Spatial Strategy).

The RMS was produced by Parsons Brinckerhoff on behalf of the Highways Agency. The study process followed guidance developed by the Highways Agency to improve the co-ordination of initiatives and the planning of future investment in maintenance and operation of specific routes.

The RMS was published in December 2005. A summary of the final strategy and the full final strategy report can be found on the Publications page (see right hand menu).
