The Project

The A66 between Stockton on Tees and Darlington is a two lane dual carriageway carrying approximately 32,000 vehicles each day. Existing junctions at Long Newton and Elton provide access to the local area including Teesside Airport. These junctions have a poor safety record.

The scheme comprises a bridge and slip roads which  allows local traffic to cross the dual carriageway and to join the main road safely. The existing junctions together with ten other gaps in the central reserve and twenty six other direct accesses to the dual carriageway will be closed. The scheme includes a new roundabout and link road to Mill Lane (C140), which is the main access route to the Airport. It also includes a new link road to the nearby village of Elton which will improve access for cyclists, pedestrians and local traffic.

In February 2007 the Highways Agency awarded a contract to Interserve Project Services to complete the detailed design and to construct the scheme. Some site clearance work took place  in the early Spring with the main construction underway in June 2007.

In early May 2008 the junction opened to traffic. Temporary traffic controls, including a 50mph speed limit on the A66, will remain in place until construction work is complete later this year. Drivers are asked to continue to take extra care while the temporary controls remain in place.
