The Project

The proposal is to dual 5km of existing single carriageway by building a new, two lane carriageway adjacent to the existing road. The purpose of the scheme is to improve road safety. The Government's budget for the dualling is £10.161million.

Progress Update

In February 2006 Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering Ltd was appointed as Contractor for this scheme. Their design partner is Atkins. The contract also includes the dualling of the A66 Carkin Moor to Scotch Corner scheme. The schemes will be built concurrently. The site clearance work began on 20 March 2006. The main construction works are now well underway and are expected to be completed by summer 2007.

Safety

There is a 40mph speed limit and overtaking ban in force over the length of the scheme. This is for the safety of the public and the workforce. Although most of the construction works are taking place adjacent to the existing carriageway, there are a number of works accesses along the route where large, slow moving site vehicles are turning onto and off the A66. These would present a safety hazard if the speed restriction was not in place.  Therefore, it is important that motorists adhere to the speed limit and overtaking ban  for the safety off all road users.
