Side Road Closure
Forcett Lane
From Monday the 4th June the B6247, Forcett Lane South will be closed for approximately 3 weeks at its junction with the A66. This is to allow improvement works to the junction to be carried out. Traffic on the A66 will be unaffected.
Access to Gilling West will be via Melsonby Crossroads. A diversion route will be signposted.
Melsonby South
From Monday 9 July the southern junction at Melsonby crossroads (C28 Gilling West) will be closed for approximately 4 weeks. This will allow the reconstruction of the junction in the vicinity of Gatherley Moor Farm. Through traffic on the A66 is unaffected by this closure.
A diversion route will be signed via the B6274 Forcett Lane, which will be re-opened before the Melsonby South junction is closed.
Traffic update - change to road layout
From Monday 4th June all traffic on the A66 will be switched onto the new eastbound carriageway, in contraflow, from Carkin Moor to a point immediately west of Melsonby Crossroads. This will allow works to be carried out on the existing carriageway.
Drivers are asked to take care when travelling through the works and to take note of signs and speed restrictions.
The Project
The proposal is to dual of existing single carriageway by building a new, two lane carriageway adjacent to the existing road. The purpose of the scheme is to improve road safety. The Government's budget for the dualling is £11.984 million.
Progress Update
In February 2006 Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering Ltd was appointed as Contractor for this scheme. Their design partner is Atkins. The contract also includes the dualling of the A66 Greta Bridge to Stephen Bank scheme. The schemes will be built concurrently. The site clearance work began on 20 March 2006. The main construction works are now well underway and are expected to be completed by summer 2007.
Safety
There is a 40mph speed limit and overtaking ban in force over the length of the scheme. This is for the safety of the public and the workforce. Although most of the construction works are taking place adjacent to the existing carriageway, there are a number of works accesses along the route where large, slow moving site vehicles are turning onto and off the A66. These would present a safety hazard if the speed restriction was not in place. Therefore, it is important that motorists adhere to the speed limit and overtaking ban for the safety off all road users.
