The Project

This junction using an underpass linked to roundabouts on both sides of the A1 trunk road and connecting to the A1 by way of slip roads was opened in September 2004 and was officially opened by a tree planting ceremony in Stannington village on 2nd December 2004.

The four existing central reserve crossings have been closed, and the 50mph speed limit lifted on 10th October 2004.

This scheme has met it's goals of improved safety and integration of Stannington Village's east and west areas.

Five Year After study

As part of our ongoing programme of Post Opening Project Evaluation (POPE) this scheme has been reviewed at one and five years after opening.  The studies compare the outturn effects of this scheme to the predicted impacts. A summary of the five year after report is available to download here:  A1 Stannington Grade Separated Junction (PDF 38KB)
