The Project

The works involve the resurfacing of the worn out road surface on the northbound carriageway between Talke and M6 Junction 16. There will also be improvements to the drainage, safety fencing and road markings. The scheme is worth £2.7 million, and the contractor for the work is Tarmac Ltd.

The works start on Monday 14th February 2005, and are expected to last up to 10 weeks. This is subject to weather condition, and any unforeseen circumstances.

As part of the resurfacing the road surface will be replaced with a new low noise surface. There will also be improvements to drainage, safety fencing and road markings.

As part of these works it will be necessary to implement various road, and lane closures. Both lanes, of both carriageways will be open during peak periods. Outside peak periods will be subject to either contraflow on the southbound carriageway (1 lane in each direction), or specific lane closures as works progress. As part of the works, it will be necessary for overnight closures on the exit slip roads at Talke and Alsager.

A 40 mph speed restriction, on both carriageways, will be in force during the period of these works. This is necessary to ensure the safety of the road work force, and for the safety of all road users.

There will be 2 instances where it will be necessary for an overnight total road closure of the A500 near to the M6 junction 16, in order to resurface the final section of this road.

Well signed diversions will be put into place during these works, and signed local diversions will in place for any over night slip road closures

The works have been designed to ensure minimum disruption, although traffic queuing is expected in each direction on the approach to the roadworks. Delays can be expected during the weekday mornings and evening peak periods due to the enforced speed limit. Drivers should all allow extra time for their journey
