The Project

The Highways Agency is widening the A500 at Stoke-on-Trent, between the B5045 Shelton New Road and the A50. The scheme involves the replacement of the existing roundabouts at the A5006, Stoke Road and the A5007, City Road, with underpasses. Local traffic will be taken over the new underpasses on bridges and traffic signal control junctions will allow for more efficient connections between the local and trunk road network. The main benefits of the scheme are:

  • To assist in the Economic Regeneration Strategy for the City of Stoke on Trent
  • Enhance and protect the urban environment
  • Improve facilities for pedestrians cyclists and busses, with better access across the A500

The project will also improve the Trent and Mersey Canal, the River Trent, Fowlea Brook and Whieldon Road.

Advance works started at the beginning of February 2004 with work to divert sections of the Trent and Mersey Canal prior to the permanent canal diversion. Works have been carefully programmed and completed as soon as possible to minimise any disruption for leisure boat users.

Work on the main contract started during mid February 2004, with completion programmed for late Summer 2006. The first activities involved setting up the traffic management and installing temporary traffic signals to allow pedestrians and other non-motorised users to cross Stoke Road Roundabout and City Road Roundabout safely.

During the works there has been a number of changes to traffic management layouts, including overnight closures and lane restrictions.  The Highways Agency apologises for the inconvenience that our work may have on your journey.  Further restrictions will be required but these will be planned to keep disruption to a minimum where possible.

You can find out more about the current progress of the project, as well as details of the proposals, printable versions of newsletters and historical data, using the links in the right hand menu. The historical data includes evidence provided at public enquiry and a summary of the Environmental statement in non-technical language.
