The Project

The Highways Agency began improvement work on the A5 in late August 2005. The works finished on schedule in mid-February 2006. These works will improve safety for all road users.

Dodwells Roundabout to M69 Resurfacing

In August and September 2005 we resurfaced a number of locations on the A5 between Dodwells roundabout and the junction with the M69. The A5 was closed overnight while work was carried out between 8pm and 6am. Local diversion routes were fully signed.

Witherley to MIRA Resurfacing

In September and October 2005 we resurfaced the A5 between Witherley and MIRA.  Work was carried out during off peak times between 8pm and 6am. Traffic was controlled by temporary traffic lights. A diversion via the A47 and B4111 was clearly signed.

Railway Bridge and Canal Bridge Re-Waterproofing

We will be carrying out work to re-waterproof the railway bridge and canal bridge north of Atherstone. Traffic will be reduced to single lane in each direction on the dual carriageway with a 40 mph speed limit. The Long Street slip road from Atherstone towards Tamworth will be closed with a clearly signed local diversion route. The slip road into Atherstone will remain open at all times. The Merevale Road gap will be closed with traffic diverted via Mancetter Island. The work was due to start 17 October 2005 but has now been postponed until further notice.

Mancetter Island Resurfacing

We have resurfaced the road at Mancetter Island. The work started on 23 January 2006 and lasted for about 3 weeks. As some lanes were closed, traffic was in a contraflow on the roundabout. Some local roads were closed and diversions were clearly signed. A 30mph speed limit was enforced.
