The Project
The A5 Weeford - Fazeley scheme involved the construction of 5km of new 2-lane dual carriageway between the A5/A38 Junction at Weeford Island and Weeford. It has replaced the existing single-carriageway A5 which has poor alignment, substandard accesses and junctions and severs the village of Hints. It was the only remaining single carriageway stretch of A5 between the M42 and A38.
The scheme also grade-separated Weeford Island, linking up the A38 beneath the existing roundabout, reducing congestion and improving journey time, reliability and safety.
Bridleway and cyclist/pedestrian crossing facilities over the A38 have also been provided.
The first traffic used the new A5 on 24th August 2005 and the scheme was officially opened by Roads Minister Dr Stephen Ladyman on the 12th October 2005. The Opening Ceremony took place alongside the new A5 bypass to mark the completion of works with the unveiling of a plaque by Dr Ladyman. To celebrate the replacement of the original roman road, Watling Street, Pupils from St Gabriel's Roman Catholic School dressed in Roman helmets and performed a poem which they had written for the event as part of a school project.
Traffic Impact Study Report
This report represents the Traffic Impact Study for the A5 Weeford Fazeley Improvements, and has been prepared as part of the Highways Agency Post-Opening Project Evaluation (POPE) Commission. The purpose of the report is to provide an initial assessment of traffic and journey time changes soon after scheme completion.
Silver Award for A5 Weeford to Fazeley Improvement Scheme
The A5 Weeford to Fazeley Scheme has been awarded a 2006 National Silver Award by the Considerate Contractors Scheme. The Considerate Contractors Scheme aims to "improve the image of construction" and it was a requirement of the contract that the scheme should be registered under the scheme. Each site is monitored by an independent assessor and scored out of 40 points. The site is marked against the eight elements that make up a considerate site, namely: Considerate, Environment, Cleanliness, Good Neighbour, Respectful, Safe, Responsible, Accountable. The current national average score is 30. The site scored 39.5 on each of is assessments, which show that the site is doing something exceptional, as well as generally working to a very high standard. 298 awards will be presented this year, which represents just under 10% of the total sites currently registered.
HA Project Sponsor Jennie Cowls said "The award is certainly well deserved and is just one indicator of the professional and competent approach that the team took to the project as a whole."
