A45/A46 Tollbar End Improvement

Green Option. Underpass at Tollbar End from A46 Coventry Bypass to A45 Stonebridge Highway plus a new A45/A46 Link

green option - View larger image

Roundabout reconstruction with A45 Stonebridge Highway to A46 passing beneath plus new link roads from A46 to A45 (London Road) and through to Siskin Drive.

The roundabout would encroach on land adjacent to the B4110 London Road, the adjacent retail store car park, and land towards Rowley Road. Movements between A45 to A46 would be via a dual two-lane underpass beneath the edge of the roundabout and connecting roads. New links from the A46 would connect with the A45 at a new signalised junction. The extension into Middlemarch Business Park ends with a new roundabout on Siskin Drive. With this scheme option widening of A45 Stonebridge Highway to dual three lanes is a requirement to cope with joining / leaving traffic from the roundabouts at Tollbar End and Stivichall Interchange. Changes to Stivichall roundabout, with some traffic signals, are also needed.

SCHEME OPTIONTrafficDesign / ConstructionEnvironment
GREEN

Provides most traffic relief to Tollbar End junction

Journey time reliability improved

Retains most existing movements with some minor diversions

Access to Brandon Lane is restricted

Pedestrian / Cycle links maintained

Flexibility to incorporate bus priorities

Provides secondary access to Middlemarch Business Park, Coventry Airport

Removes Rowley Road / Siskin Drive roundabout junction

Substantial traffic management would be required throughout construction period

Underpass to be constructed in tunnel under roundabout

Requires substantial diversion of public utilities services

Up to 45 metre wide strip of land between A45 London Road and A46 Coventry Eastern Bypass, and between A45 London Road and Siskin Drive would be required

Land would probably be required from allotments, properties on B4110 London Road, and the Orchard Retail Park

May require residential property demolition

NoiseOverall improvement achieved with around 60 less people annoyed by road traffic noise with scheme than without the scheme
Air QualitySignificant improvement in air quality at 100 properties with a significant worsening at around 160 properties. Provides the largest reduction in pollutant weighted properties
Greenhouse GasesGenerates the lowest increase in greenhouse gas emissions
LandscapeModerate negative impact on vegetation along A45 / A46. Overall moderate landscape and visual impact
AmbienceReduced stress for some road users by avoiding Tollbar roundabout, but offset by new link road junctions. Link road will provide countryside views. Overall medium impact
TownscapeFeatures are typical and not particularly valued. Neutral in impact
BiodiversitySlight negative impact on conservation sites including Stonebridge Meadows, River Stowe, Coventry Nature Conservation Site and Warwickshire Ecosite. Potential intermediate negative impact on protected species, but could be minimised by mitigation
HeritageImpact on remains of Ryton Bridge, a listed building. Otherwise neutral impact
WaterCould affect the Rivers Avon, Sowe and Sherbourne - risk of pollution and impact on the floodplain
Physical FitnessAdditional scope for provision for pedestrian / cyclists at junctions. Overall impact neutral
