Route Description

M180/A180/A160(M18-Grimsby)

Route description

The M180/A180/A160 route runs in an east to west direction, from the M18 in the west to Grimsby and the ports on the South Humber Bank in the east.

map of scheme on m180

These three trunk roads have a combined total length of approximately 80km (50 miles) and are of varying standards. 47% of the study route is three lane dual carriageway Motorway, 52% is Dual carriageway All Purpose and 1 % is Single Carriageway All Purpose.

From the west of the route the M180 passes through largely rural areas of North Lincolnshire and around the south of the town of Scunthorpe, to which Junctions 3 and 4 provide access.

3 lanes on the M180

At Junction 5 of the M180, which provides access to Humberside Airport to the south and the Humber Bridge to the north via the A15, the route becomes the two lane All Purpose A180 and continues to the ports and into Grimsby.

In a national context, traffic flows on the route are generally low for this standard of road. However, as the route provides access to the core highway network from the ports on the east coast it is subject to a high proportion of Heavy Goods Vehicles.

Further to the east on the A180, the A160 begins which provides direct access to ports and surrounding areas. There are considerable levels of development forecast adjacent to the A160, to assist in regenerating the economy in the area and supporting the continued expansion of the ports, such as Immingham and the Humber Sea Terminal.

Currently the Immingham and Grimsby Port handles approximately 10% of the UK cargo market.

From the junction with the A160 the A180 continues into the town of Grimsby.
