Route Description
M1 Jct 30 to end (A1) and M621
Route description
The M1 from Chesterfield to Leeds is part of the M1 Motorway linking the North and North East of England to the East Midlands, the south of England, London and continental Europe. It is also a vital link within South and West Yorkshire providing access to major urban areas of the conurbation including Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Wakefield. Together with the M621 it also provides access to the southern part of Leeds, and Leeds City Centre.
That part of the M1 north of the M62, together with the section of the A1(M) from M1 junction 48 to the A64 at Bramham forms almost all of the M1-A1 DBFO concession held by Yorkshire Link.
The route length is approximately 97km (61 miles). The entire route is of motorway standard with most of it being dual three lane. Some 80% of the M1 is rural motorway more than 30 years old, whilst the remainder and the A1(M) south of Bramham are modern. The sections of the M621 are of varying age with those in south central Leeds having some urban motorway characteristics.
Much of South Yorkshire through which the M1 runs is eligible for 'Objective 1' funding from the European Union for regeneration projects.
The character of the road varies between the urban motorway of the M621 with its clustered junctions, the older motorway of the M1 south of the M62 and the modern motorway of the Yorkshire Link DBFO concession. The Motorway can be split into three parts:
The M1 South of the M62
This part of the M1 motorway runs all the way from Junction 30 of the M1 at Barlborough to junction 42 of the M1 at Lofthouse south of Leeds. It runs over the Tinsley viaduct between Sheffield and Rotherham and skirts the West side of Barnsley and Wakefield.
The Yorkshire Link DBFO concession North of the M62
This length of motorway comprises the M1-A1 link to the North and West of Rothwell and Garforth, a section of the M1 North of the M62 rebuilt and widened to current standards and the A1(M) from junctions 44 to 45 also recently upgraded to motorway standards.
The M621
The M621 section of the study runs from junction 43 of the M1 near Leeds westwards to junction 27 of the M62. In the Leeds city centre section, junctions are bunched together and congestion regularly occurs.
