The Project

photo 1On the 9th June 2005, Roads Minister Dr Stephen Ladyman opened the new flyover bridge over the A64 at Colton Lane / Bilbrough Top junction. The construction of the new bridge has allowed the Highways Agency to close the central reserve gaps at Bilbrough Top, which has been the scene of a number of accidents.

The works for the new flyover began in February 2004 with completion in June 2005. The improvements include a new, safer access into the Bilbrough Top Service Area and a new access onto the A64 from Bilbrough and Colton villages. The £11.32m scheme aims to improve safety for motorists and pedestrians.

photo 2Speeches were made by various people, including Derek Drysdale of the Highways Agency, John Grogan MP, John Branton of Birse Civils and finally Dr Stephen Ladyman before the cutting of the ribbon.

The scheme, which has been long campaigned for, included the local community. Dr Stephen Ladyman presented flowers to local resident, Mrs Lawrence to thank her for distributing newsletters and letter drops throughout the duration of the scheme.

photo 3A local walking group made a request at the start of works for the group to be involved in the Opening Ceremony. Alan Pennington, leading the walking group was among the first to go over the new flyover just before it was open to traffic.
