Route Approved
The Highways Agency has been given approval to continue development of a bypass of Rillington village by Roads Minister, David Jamieson.
The bypass will run to the south of the village along the Blue route corridor, which was identified as one of three options shown at an exhibition in the village in November 2000.
However, in response to the views of local people expressed during the public consultation, the route will be extended to the west to remove the bends at Rillington Fields.
David Jamieson said:
"The bypass will significantly improve the environment within the village, particularly during the busy summer holiday period.
"This will result in less noise, improved air quality and a reduced risk of accidents, as outlined in the Government's Ten-Year Plan for transport.
"The scheme is also now included in the Government's Targeted Programme of Improvements (TPI) - major road schemes designed to cut congestion and improve road safety."
The Highways Agency's Project Manager, David Phillips, said:
"We recognise the quality of the landscape in the area and will be working closely with other agencies, such as English Nature and English Heritage, to ensure that we identify appropriate measures both to protect and enhance the built and natural environment."
The bypass will start to the east of Scagglethorpe, passing north of Rillington Fields, crossing the existing A64 near West Field and heading west towards Collinson Lane where a new overbridge will be provided. Then, it will run parallel to Sands Lane, crossing Wintringham Road to the north of Scampston Mill Farm, before rejoining the A64 immediately to the east of Scampston Bridge.
The central section of the bypass will be built in a cutting to reduce noise and visual impact in the area. Following views received during public consultation an extension of the bypass to the west around the bends at Rillington Fields will also be investigated further.
Roundabout junctions are proposed at both ends of the bypass. Consideration will be given to locating the junction at the eastern end on Wintringham Road to reduce the impact on Scampston Park and avoid Scampston Bridge, which is a Listed Structure.
The scheme will be progressed subject to regional priorities, with input from the Regional Transport Body.
