Timetable

  1. 1833 - Hedon road is built under a turnpike act.
  2. 1981 - The responsibility for Hedon Road is passed from Humberside County Council to the Department of transport
  3. 1987 - The County Council is appointed to design a scheme.
  4. 1989 - Another White paper extends the scheme as far as Saltend and a public consultation is held.
  5. 1990 - The Secretary of state for transport announces the preferred route and compulsory purchase orders are drawn up.
  6. 1992 - Orders are published and the route unveiled at an exhibition.
  7. 1993 - The scheme is studied by a public inquiry.
  8. 1994 - Line and side road orders are made
  9. April 1998 - Compulsory purchase order are made
  10. December 1998 - Transport Minister Lord Whitty gives the go-ahead for the scheme.
  11. Winter 1998 - Surveys and assessments are updated.
  12. Summer 2000 - Contract documents are prepared and advance works carried out, such as demolition of derelict properties in Marfleet and the diversion of water pipes serving BP. Tenders are also invited.
  13. February 2001 - The contract has now been awarded to Alfred McAlpine Construction LTD, who will spend four months on the first stage of the scheme, doing further design work. Stage two will also begin, as work starts on a new road from Mount Pleasant to Alexander Docks. The contractors will also be ensuring that the properties most likely to experience noise from the construction works are dealt with as a priority.
  14. November 2003 - Works completed / road opened by Rt Hon John Prescott MP, Deputy Prime Minister.
