The Project
This section of the A1 forms part of the strategic route between London and Edinburgh as well as providing a trunk road link to principal towns.
Congestion encourages drivers to avoid the trunk route, bringing pollution and noise into local towns and villages and making residential roads more dangerous.
On the 25th June 2002 the Minister for Transport announced a package of improvements on the A1 which included a scheme to upgrade 6 miles (10km) of the A1 between the A64 Bramham Crossroads and Wetherby to a dual three-lane motorway.
On Friday 31 July 2009 the A1 between Bramham Crossroads and Kirk Deighton Junction, north of Wetherby became motorway standard. At this time, all traffic management on the new A1(M) around Wetherby was lifted.
The Under-Secretary of State for Transport: Christopher Mole MP attended a completion of works ceremony at Wetherby Grange on the 1 December 2009 and unveiled a plaque to commemorate the end of major construction.
Responsible for operation of the local access road network was handed over to Leeds City Council in December 2009.
