The Project
Turfdown Crossroads is situated on the A38 in Cornwall, located approximately 2.5km southeast of Bodmin centre and 0.4km east of the A30 Trunk Road. At the crossroads, two minor roads cross the A38; one leads to the village of Turfdown to the north, the other to Lanhydrock to the south. There is a junction to the southbound entry sliproad of the A30 immediately to the east of the crossroads. Previously traffic travelling from Bodmin onto the southbound A30 had to turn right on the A38 across oncoming traffic using a ghost island road layout. The site is centred at grid reference SX 0933 6550.
This scheme, which began on 31 October 2005 and was completed in the Spring 2006, was developed to improve both junctions. Several Personal Injury Accidents (PIAs) had occurred at or near the two junctions. Accident rates were above the national average. The proximity of the two junctions and their alignments contributed to this poor safety record. The primary scheme objective was therefore to improve safety at the junctions. Entering the Trunk Road from the side roads caused driver frustration, and some traffic queuing was experienced.
The improvement comprises a single roundabout in place of the existing crossroads, with a section of single lane dual carriageway to the west. The right turn facility for traffic travelling from Bodmin onto the A30 Slip was removed, so that traffic wishing to turn right now carries on to the roundabout. The entry to the A30 sliproad is thus made from the A38 westbound exit from the roundabout.
The scheme included the construction of footways and cycleways throughout the site and a Pegasus crossing to the east of the roundabout, to facilitate the passage of horses and riders across the road.
