The Project

Phase 5 of the M4 Junction 8/9-10 scheme has now been completed, and the system has been commissioned. Work commenced in July 2005, on the £7million communications upgrade project between M4 Junctions 8/9 (Maidenhead) and Junction 10 (Reading).

New variable message signs and emergency telephones were installed between the Maidenhead and Reading section of the M4, with the new signs having the capacity to display pictures as well as text, providing drivers with better information about incidents and conditions on the road ahead.

A new incident detection system will now identify queuing traffic and automatically activate signals to warn approaching vehicles of a hazard. Drivers will be able to slow down in time, reducing further incidents, and consider alternative routes which will help cut congestion. Similar schemes in the UK have reduced the number of injury accidents by 13 per cent.

In summary, the benefits of this scheme include:

  • Creating more reliable journeys
  • Improving road safety
  • Reducing congestion
