The Project

The Highways Agency carried out major works on the M3 Junction 9 to 14 which started in July 05 and was completed in September 06.

The work which involved a £9million communications upgrade to improve the safe running of the M3 took place between Junction 9 (Winchester) and Junction 14 (near Southampton).

New variable message signs, CCTV cameras and emergency telephones have been installed. The signs are able to display pictures, as well as text. This will provide drivers with better information about incidents and conditions on the road ahead.

A new incident detection system will identify queuing traffic and automatically activate signals to warn approaching vehicles of a hazard. Drivers are now able to slow down in time, reducing further incidents, and consider alternative routes which will help cut congestion. Similar schemes in the UK have reduced the number of injury accidents by 13 per cent.

In summary, the benefits of this scheme include:

  • Creating more reliable journeys
  • Improving road safety
  • Reducing congestion
  • Informing Travelers
