The Project

The £8 million major maintenance scheme to strengthen and repair the supporting columns of the M4 over the A34 at Junction 13 is now complete. This work has ensured the bridge will remain safe and serviceable for the next 50 years.

Work on the bridge was required as over time it had been affected by road salts and the scheme was necessary to strengthen the structure to current standards.

Key work included:

  • Temporarily supporting the M4 while columns were replaced
  • Strengthening the existing footings
  • Constructing new inspection areas

Steve Cobb, Project Sponsor said:

“We are pleased to confirm that all lanes on the M4 Chieveley Junction 13 roundabout have been re-opened and that the strengthening scheme has been successfully completed.

We would like to thank the junction users for their patience and goodwill during the construction period”.
