The Project

The M25 is one of Europe's busiest motorways, handling around 200,000 vehicles every day. It is at the core of our network and is suffering from increasing congestion levels and journey times.

We need to manage traffic flows better and to help achieve this we plan to widen the carriageways from dual 3 lanes to dual 4 lanes.

We will build the new lanes within land we already own.

This is one of five schemes for the improvement of the M25 that entered the Government's Programme of Major Schemes in April 2004.

The Secretary of State considered all comments received following publication of the Environmental Statement in 2007. He made the decision that the scheme should go ahead to the construction stage. A Public Notice of this decision was made on 4th June 2008. A copy of the notice and decision letter is available in the Publications page.

Connect Plus has been appointed as the contractor for these works.

What happens next?

Advance works between Junctions 27 and 28 is already under way. This involves vegetation clearance on areas within the highway boundary. We will commence the main works between these junctions  in July. Find out more under Procurement and Timetable.

We will provide regular updates of future lane and carriageway closures under a Traffic Management page.

Start of Works Exhibitions

We have recently held a Exhibition to publicise the first phase of our forthcoming works. We will hold Start of Works Exhibitions for works on the M25 between Junctions 28 and 30 in 2010 and 2011.
