The Project

Work is about to start on major resurfacing of a 3 mile (5km) length of the A1(M) in Hertfordshire.

The work will involve resurfacing both the northbound and southbound carriageways of the A1(M) between Junction 7 (Stevenage South) and Junction 8 (Stevenage North).

Work will start on the evening of Friday 29 July 2005 and will last approximately 11 weeks.

Traffic ManagementA1(M) Jct 7 to Jct 8 (Stevenage) Major Resurfacing Scheme

There will be 24 hour, 7 days a week working with contraflows and hard shoulder running.

Two lanes in each direction will be maintained during peak periods but the number of lanes available will be reduced at other times, including the weekends.

The southbound on-slip road at Junction 8 and the northbound onslip road at Junction 7 will be closed for the duration of the works. The offslip roads will be closed on occasion. When a slip road is closed, traffi c will be diverted to the next northbound or southbound junction to return along the motorway.

A mandatory 40mph speed limit will be in operation 24 hours a day during the works. Police speed checks will be in operation.

Two lanes in each direction will be kept open over the August Bank Holiday (27, 28 and 29 August).

The work has been programmed to be carried out in the shortest practicable time and designed to keep disruption to a minimum.

However, there will be some delays and motorists should allow extra time for their journey or seek alternative routes where possible.

If you break down in the works, turn your hazard lights on and stay with your vehicle. Recovery vehicles will be standing by to tow you clear of the works free of charge.
