The Project

The Highways Agency carried out major maintenance work on the A550 between the junction with the A540 at Two Mills and the junction with the A41 in Hooton. The work started in mid October 2005 and was completed on 31 March 2006.

The road was suffering from wear and tear and needed essential maintenance. We carried out the following work:

  • Renewed and resurfaced the carriageways and footpaths.
  • Removed existing drains and replaced them with a new kerb drainage system.
  • Improved the traffic signals at Two Mills junction.
  • Improved road signs.
  • Installed new safety fencing at Ledsham Station North and Woodlands railway bridges.

The benefits of this work are:

  • A quieter road because of the new low-noise surfacing
  • Improved safety for road users and pedestrians due to:
  • New road signs
  • New fencing at railway bridges
  • Improved footpaths
  • Improved signals at Two Mills Junction

This project was procured via the Construction Management Framework. Find out more about this type of procurement.
