The Project
What has been done?
We have completed the final stage of our resurfacing work to improve safety on the A5 Tamworth Bypass, Staffordshire. Between 28 October 2005 and 7 December 2005 we completed our first stage of resurfacing work between Marlborough Way junction and the A453 Mile Oak junction.
The final stage of the work involved resurfacing the road travelling east and road travelling west on the A5 between Marlborough Way junction and M42 junction 10. We also resurfaced the exit slip road at Marlborough Way junction travelling west, and both the entry and exit slip roads at the Pennine Way junction. To reduce noise pollution for local residents we have used a quieter road surface and to protect road users we have put in a safety fence.
How long did it take?
We started work on 22 July 2006 and completed it on 23 August 2006 before the start of the Bank Holiday weekend.
To reduce the amount of disruption to road users we carried out the work at night from 20:00 hrs to 06:00 hrs. There was no work carried out on Sundays.
Traffic Management
How did this affect the traffic?
We needed to close the carriageways of the A5 and exit and entry slip roads at Marlborough Way and Pennine Way junctions when work was taking place.
For the safety of road users and the workforce a 24hr 40mph temporary speed restriction was in force for the duration of the works. For safety reasons we had to keep the speed restriction in force during the day as traffic was running on a temporary surface with no road markings.
Was there an alternative route?
A short local diversion route was clearly sign posted for all vehicles, including those over 7.5 Ton.
