The Project
The M1 J31-J32 is part of a wider package designed to reduce congestion and improve safety and journey time reliability on both the M1 and M62. It seeks to widen 1.2 miles (2 km) of the M1 corridor to 4 lanes in each direction.
Jackson Civil Engineering began construction in January 2007 and is now fully open to traffic. All four lanes in each direction were opened to traffic before Christmas.
The proposals for the widening of J31-32 were designed some time ago, before it became part of the M1 and M62 Motorway Improvements in Yorkshire. A full Environmental Impact Assessment was undertaken and an Environmental Statement published. The widening has taken place within land owned by the Highways Agency and so no Orders were required.
There are 9 projects in the M1/M62 widening/improvement package, which will result in increased capacity of the M1 between Junctions 30 and 42, and the M62 between junctions 25 and 28. These schemes are the response to Department for Transport recommendations in the South and West Yorkshire Multi Modal study (SWYMMS) for increased capacity on the M1 and M62.
One Year After study
This scheme has been reviewed as part of our ongoing programme of Post Opening Project Evaluation (POPE). The study compares the outturn effects of this scheme to the predicted impacts of the scheme.
