The Project

The M1 J31-J32 is part of a wider package designed to reduce congestion and improve safety and journey time reliability on both the M1 and M62. It seeks to widen 2 km of the M1 corridor to 4 lanes in each direction.

The M1 between J31 and 32 has been widened to 4 lanes in each direction.

As part of the M1 and M62 Motorway Improvements in Yorkshire programme, another lane will be added in each direction, starting in 2014. This will be a dedicated lane for traffic joining the M1 at Junction 31 who are travelling northbound to the M18. This will mean that traffic joining at junction 31 and wishing to travel north to Doncaster and beyond on the M18 (for example from the A57 south of Sheffield) will no longer have to merge with other traffic travelling north to Junction 32 - they will stay on a dedicated lane from Junction 31 up to the M18.

The link will stop this traffic weaving, which will increase safety, and also reduce congestion on the M1 between J31 and J32.

There are 9 projects in the M1/M62 widening/improvement package, which will result in increased capacity of the M1 between Junctions 30 and 42, and the M62 between junctions 25 and 28. These schemes are the response to Department for Transport recommendations in the South and West Yorkshire Multi Modal study (SWYMMS) for increased capacity on the M1 and M62.
