The Project
The M62 J25 to J37 is part of a wider package designed to reduce congestion and improve safety and journey time reliability on both the M1 and M62. It seeks to have an increased capacity and able to carry more traffic on the M62 corridor in each direction.
There are 9 projects in the M1/M62 widening/improvement package, which will result in increased capacity of the M1 between Junctions 30 and 42, and the M62 between junctions 25 and 28. These schemes are the response to Department for Transport recommendations in the South and West Yorkshire Multi Modal study (SWYMMS) for increased capacity on the M1 and M62.
Following the success of the M42 Dynamic Hard Shoulder (DHS) scheme which has shown to deliver a quicker and cheaper solution to improving capacity compared with conventional widening, the M1 Junctions 32 to 42 and M62 Junctions 25 to 30 will both undergo a feasibility study to investigate the use of managed motorways improvements to increase capacity. This follows the publication in July 2008 by the Transport Secretary, Ruth Kelly titled 'Roads - Delivering Choice and Reliability'.
