The Project

Refurbishment of the Grayrigg Railway Bridge on the M6 Jct 37 - 38, commenced on Monday 17 October 2005 and are scheduled for completion by late March 2006.

The works involve the removal and replacement of the bridge deck waterproofing as well as works to the three longitudinal buried joints to make the deck continuous. In addition improvement to the safety barrier on the Northbound approach will be carried out at the same time. 

Traffic Management

Mandatory speed limit of 50 mph. Traffic control consists of the following during different phases:

  • Full contraflow running - 2 lanes Northbound and 2 lanes Southbound on the Northbound carriageway (full closure of the Southbound carriageway)
  • Full contraflow running - 2 lanes Northbound and 2 lanes Southbound on the Southbound carriageway (full closure of the Northbound carriageway)
  • Hardshoulder running on the Northbound and Southbound carriageways.
  • Width restriction of 6'-6" (2.0m) to the offside running lanes during contraflow running.
  • Lane closures. 2 lanes of traffic will be maintained both Northbound and Southbound throughout the duration of the works.

Work on this project was completed on 23rd March 2006.
