The Project
Junction 40 is a split-level roundabout and motorway junction on the outskirts of Penrith where the A66 passes over the M6. The layout dates from the mid 1960's and is no longer able to cope with today's peak time traffic demands. As a result there has been an increasing number of accidents and delays.
What are we doing?
The improvements at M6 Junction 40 include:
- widening of the roundabout and approach roads to increase the capacity of the junctions;
- providing all approach roads to the roundabout with traffic lights;
- addition of lane markings and extra signs;
- improvements to the footpaths and cycleway and the installation of pedestrian and cyclist crossings;
- improvements to drainage;
- bridge maintenance;
- landscaping.
How long will the works last?
The work will take place between 19th September 2005 and February 2006 and will be phased to minimise disruption to road users and local businesses.
What are the benefits of the scheme?
- Reduced congestion and delays at peak times at the junction.
- A safer junction with fewer accidents.
- Safer routes across the junction for pedestrians, cyclists and other users
Traffic management
For the duration of the work the traffic will be managed to provide a safe environment for both the travelling public and the workforce. These measures will cause some disruption.
- 2 lanes will be available on the roundabout and approach roads between Monday and Friday at peak times and most weekends during the day.
- Some overnight closures will be necessary and diversion routes will be put in place. We will ensure that local businesses are consulted in good time and the dates of any closures advertised well in advance.
- The traffic management will be removed for the public holidays at Christmas and New Year.
- We will endeavour to minimise disruption to road users, local businesses and residents.
Work on this project was completed on 13th February 2006.
