The Project

The scheme involves the repair and replacement to the bridge joints and replacement of the deck drainage system as well as resurfacing to Swalwell Interchange bridge, which carries the A1 over the River Derwent close to the Metro Centre.

The works started on 16th June 2007 and were completed on 24th September 2007 at a cost of £1m.

Traffic Management

Traffic will be diverted overnight between 10pm and 6am from the A1, in one direction only, via a short clearly signed route close to the Metrocentre to allow the works to be undertaken safely. One lane of traffic will remain open over the bridge during this time and two lanes in each direction will be maintained at all other times.
